Retraining the Race Horse

Purchasing or adopting a retired race horse can be an excellent way of getting a horse for most sport horse disciplines. Many are available for little or no cost depending on the reasons for their retirement and current condition. Be prepared to give them six months to a year off before any training can begin. Typical reasons for retirement are injuries or lack of ability or more importantly, desire for racing.

X race horses have a lot of training, and will do some things very easily, but then be confused by things that you would expect even a beginner to know. Like lunging for example. Race horse trainers never do that. However typically they will tie, load, clip, and you can mess with their legs all day. Race horses are controlled primarily by the bit, and won't know leg aids, or verbal aids for the most part. I would spend a couple months working on the basics before moving on. Frankly, this is also not a bad way to develop a relationship with your new horse.
